Adult watercolour

Why should kids have all the fun this summer? Indulge in a five day camp for adults to explore the characteristics and capabilities of watercolour. Seasonal subjects and themes will be explored and different techniques will be covered in a series of painting exercises. The class will complete several projects while concentrating on focal point, composition, colour mixing and different methods of application. We will progress from the least challenging to the most difficult throughout the week. Individualized instruction makes this course suitable for all levels.

Registration is limited so don't wait until the last minute to sign up if you would really like to take this course.

Registration may take place online at the Surrey City website or through the front desk of the Surrey Art Gallery at Bear Creek Park either in person or over the phone- 604-501-5566

supply list

SUPPLIES FOR ADULT WATERCOLOUR CLASSES

  • PAPER – Students should buy 2, 22” X 30” pieces of watercolour paper – artists’ quality, at least 140lb. Brand names are d’Arches, Winsor Newton, Aquarelle, Fabriano Aristico, Saunders, Bockingford and Opus Eruopean Watercolour paper (if buying your paper at Opus). The finish of the paper should be cold pressed or NOT, or medium – all of which mean exactly the same thing to different groups of people. Cut the paper into quarters.
  • BRUSHES- you should have 3 brushes as a minimum – one 1” flat brush, one # 6 or #7 round , one # 2 or #3 rigger or liner. Other brushes include a hake (pronounced haw-kay) about 1 or 2” wash mop.
  • PAINT– I recommend a limited 5 colour palette to get started – Ultramarine Blue (French Ultramarine is good), Thalo or Winsor blue ( winsor blue is Winsor and Newton’s trade name for thalo), new gamboge yellow, permanent rose, and burnt sienna. If you have money that you are anxious to spend you could include cobalt blue( Winsor and Newton), quinacridone gold, quinacridone burnt orange(quinacridone paints by Daniel Smith), and red rose deep (da Vinci paints). The most important thing about the paint is to buy artist quality – this excludes paint such as van gough, pentel, or ones clearly marked student grade.
  • PALETTES- I use a throw away palette which is actually a food tray from the East Indian market with deep wells for mixing paint – they are incredibly inexpensive. But if you want an art store palette you need one with deep wells and a cover is always useful for transporting.
  • MISCELLAENEOUS – spray bottles, sea sponge, salt, pencil, sketch paper, masking fluid, masking fluid remover, an old credit card cut up, clean rags or paper towels.
